'India holds third largest quantity of chemical weapons'

KARACHI: Brig Mohammed Hayat Khan, Director General, Disarmament Cell, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has said that after Russia and the USA, India holds the largest quantity of chemical weapons, which under an international agreement, must be destroyed within ten years.

Replying to a question during a meeting of Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) on Tuesday, he said that Pakistan was a signatory to the Chemical Weapons Conventions (CWC) and, therefore, it was obligatory for the chemical related industries to declare if they imported and used any chemicals which fell under the schedule of toxic chemicals that could be used in one way or the other for manufacturing chemical weapons.

Col. Liaquat Ali Khan, Director, Disarmament Cell, gave a detailed presentation on the different schedules of chemicals, which are used in the industries of Pakistan.

Welcoming the guests, Shaikh Manzar Alam, Chairman, KATI, gave a brief introduction of the Korangi industrial area.
