Monitoring team
dissatisfied with PS,
jail condition
PESHAWAR: The special monitoring team of Pak Army on police and jails, on Saturday expressed dissatisfaction over condition of sub-jail in Charssada, on paying a surprise visit there.
The team, led by the provincial chief Brig. Manzoor Iqbal Bangash, found the sub-jail of Charssada like a prison filled with detenues beyond its capacity with inferior quality food, poor medical facility, obsolete electricity wiring
and antiquated building.
Surprisingly, the Army monitors were quite satisfied with the hygienic condition of the Charssada incarcerator.
It was found that the jail was overcrowded with 259 prisoners (255 male and four female), much beyond its maximum capacity of 120 prisoners (110 male and 10 female).
Most of the prisoners informed the team that they were not being produced before any corut of law after detention. For this delinquency, the jail officials said that they have limited police staff to take the prisoners to court.
The monitoring team officials suggested to the jail authorities to make arrangements for production of such prisoners who are arrested in minor crime before the Magistrates.
"If the jail authorities have some security risk due to lack of staff, they should also make a arrangements for production of detenues before the magistrate in the jail premises," the Army monitors observed.
A number of juvenile prisoners were also found in the jail, while keeping minors with elder is prohibited.
After Charssada sub-jail the monitoring team inspected Charssada police station and expressed complete dissatisfaction over its affairs.
The police station record was not being maintained. No documentation was undertaken for arrested captives and no proper checking by the high-ups had been made.
A number of detenues in the lock-up were detained without entry of their name in the record.
The officials in Charssada police station also failed to produce proper record of hardened criminals in their area.ÑAPP
