Interim bail granted to lady police inspector

KARACHI: Aftab Ahmed Khan, Judge, Provincial Anti Corruption Court, on Thursday granted interim bail against a surety of Rs 50,000 to a lady inspector Mst Naseem Akhtar of Police Training Institute, Saeedabad.

Mehmood Alam Rizvi, advocate, appearing for the accused/applicant, submitted that the charges against his client were of corruption and as such registration of an FIR by Saeedabad Police is illegal.

He said the matter pertains to anti-corruption and according to law only the ACE (Anti Corruption Establishment) can take action against his client. The name of his client also did not appear in the FIR, submitted the counsel for applicant/accused.

According to the prosecution the applicant/accused and other police officers were booked on the order of DIG, Karachi. As a result of an enquiry according to which, police officers deputed at the training centre were found involved in massive corruption and extortion of 'bhatta' from trainee policemen.

The enquiry was ordered after general complaints from the trainees that those candidates, who attend to their training regularly and refuse to pay bribe were declared fail while irregular trainees, who grease the palms of supervisory/training staff were passed.

Meanwhile a bench of Sindh High Court, comprising Justice Mohammad Ashraf Leghari, gave protective bail for 10 days to a naib tehsildar Abdul Karim of Lyari, District Lasbella, Balochistan.

Abdul Karim was booked in alleged murder case of 85-year-old Dhalwan from whom a party of levys, headed by the accused/applicant, recovered 75 bottles of foreign liquor.

The recovery was made on January 2000 and the man died on January 10, 2000, allegedly because of torture meted out to deceased by the levys at the time of recovery.

Behram Khan Ujjan, advocate, appearing for the accused/applicant sought protective bail so that the accused surrender himself before the relevant court at Khuzdar.

Another bench of the SHC, comprising Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar issued notices to Karachi DIG and other respondents for February 16.

The bench was hearing a constitutional petition filed by Sohail, former sector incharge of MQM (Orangi Township sector). Behram Khan Ujjan, advocate, appearing for the petitioner requested the court to direct the police to inform number of cases if any pending or registered against the petitioner.ÑAPP
