CS's directive to set up Mohallah committees
KARACHI: Sindh Chief Secretary Mohammad Zubair Kidwai has directed the local administration for the establishment of ward/mohallah committees and that these be made functional within 15 days.
He issued the directive while presiding over a meeting here on Thursday to review the matter pertaining to the establishment of ward/mohallah committees.
Kidwai spelled out modalities for getting up of these committees and it was decided that in the first phase committees would be set up at ward level and later on their scope will be extended to the mohallah level.
A mohallah-level committee should consist of no more than 200 household.
Each ward/mohallah committee should comprise of seven to 10 members and one of 10 should be nominated as the convener.
Only those people should be made members of these committees who enjoy good reputation. The members should preferably be drawn from notables, social workers, civil defence volunteers, NGOs and those who are committed to serve the people.
The sub-divisional magistrates or SDPOs concerned would be responsible for selecting the members after a careful exercise.
The deputy commissioner of the concerned district would personally monitor the performance of the committees.
The committees would perform the function of watch and ward. All disputes and matters likely to lead to any possible riot of serious affray to affect the public peace in their jurisdiction would be identified and communicated to the concerned SDMs or SHOs.
These committees would also identify the local civic problem and in liaison with the office of the concerned civic agency, get the same resolved.
The meeting also reviewed establishment and working of the inspection teams comprising of SDMs, SDPOs and a representative of district monitoring team.
These teams to be formed as sub-divisional levels, would inspect the police stations in their respective areas.
They will monitor the performance of the police stations and look into the public complaints regarding police excess, illegal detention and non-registration of FIRs etc.
The meeting was attended by the home secretary, IGP, Commissioner Karachi, DIG Karachi, all DCs and SSPs and representative of provincial monitoring team.ÑAPP
