Afghanistan buys 25,000 tonnes of wheat from Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The Taliban authorities have started shipping wheat from Pakistan to Afghanistan, an official of the Afghan Embassy in Islamabad said on Saturday.

Maulvi Nazeerullah, the commercial attache of the embassy, said that Taliban authorities had shipped about 3,500 tonnes of wheat from Pakistan to Afghanistan so far this year. The shipment began at the beginning of this month.

He said that 2,275 tonnes of wheat had been transported to Kandahar via Chaman near Quetta and another 1,116 tonnes to Kabul via Torkhum near Peshawar.

"The wheat has been bought at the price of Rs 9.45 per kg while the price in Afghanistan is about Rs 11 for the same," Nazeerullah said, adding that the price had fallen with the arrival of the wheat in Kandahar and Kabul.

Maulvi Nazeerullah said that a total of 25,000 tonnes of wheat had been purchased from Pakistan and would be sent to Afghanistan in the following weeks.

He said the wheat situation had improved now because wheat flour is now being freely imported from Pakistan, Iran and Turkmenistan and the prices have fallen to a large extent.-Internews
