900mw of tidal energy can be generated from Sindh-B'stan coast
LAILA A ALI
QUETTA: The Sindh-Balochistan coast along the Arabian Sea is capable of generating 900 mw tidal energy good enough for Karachi and southern Balochistan and its coastal belt.
A report on tidal energy jointly prepared by American and Pakistani scientists, which took two years to complete, was reported to be under consideration of the government.
Sources said on Tuesday that another report on use of solar energy was also being considered by the government.
The report reveals if harnessed and conserved, solar energy falling on 25 percent of Balochistan could meet country's major energy requirement. Solar energy technology has been well developed by the National Institute of Silicon Technology Islamabad. It could be very well obtained either by the public or private sector or both to make maximum use of solar energy in several parts of Pakistan with focus on Balochistan, which is extremely short of power supply.
Meanwhile, the pilot solar power energy system set up by an American firm, World Water Corporation, has yielded positive results. The system set up in the suburbs of Quetta is a trendsetter in providing sustainable methods for clean drinking water, irrigation, solar power lights and communication in arid and semi-arid areas of Balochistan and other similar terrain in several parts of Pakistan.
