Anita calls for

improvements in medical

education

KARACHI: Sindh Education Minister Prof. Anita Ghulam Ali has called for bringing about the required improvements in medical education.

She was speaking as chief guest at the inaugural session of the 15th annual symposium of the Pakistan Society of Physicians (PSP) at Liaquat National Hospital auditorium here on Friday.

The three-day moot, being held in collaboration with the Society of Gynaecologists and Obstetricients of Pakistan (SGOP), is being attended by about 300 delegates.

The minister stressed the need of continuing medical education for doctors as well as for the holding of workshops, symposia and clinical meetings regularly to update knowledge.

She said quacks are playing havoc, particularly, in rural areas and asked the doctors to go there for breaking this cycle.

Anita also stressed the need for women education and added, we should create strong women by educating them so that the society could flourish on the basis of equality.

PSP President Dr. Maqbool Jafary in his address said a number of female students secure admission in the medical colleges but lesser number perform in the field after graduation and 10 to 15 percent lady doctors leave mainly due to their family reasons.

He said the job facilities for female doctors are poor and suggested that there should be incentives for them to balance their professional and family lives.

Dr. Jafary said there should also be nurseries at the hospitals so as to cater to the needs of lady doctors having small children.

Prof. Aftab Munir also spoke on the occasion.

PSP General Secretary Dr. Fatema Jawed and Dr. Subhana Tayyab, presented reports about PSP and SGOP respectively.

Later, the minister also want round the stalls of the medical exhibition arranged on the occasion.ÑAPP
