Two oil piers at Karachi Port sufficient for next three years

RECORDER REPORT

KARACHI: The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has said that the capacity of two Oil Piers (16 MTA) is sufficient to meet the requirement of liquid cargo handling at the Karachi Port for the next three years. It has further taken necessary steps to meet liquid cargo handling requirement during the reconstruction of OP-2 and hence there will not be any diversion or shifting of liquid cargo from the Karachi Port to Port Qasim.

Commenting on a news item published in Business Recorder issue of February 8, which contained request from Terminal Operators of Pakistan (TAP) to PQA to reserve an extra berth for handling of liquid cargo, a KPT spokesman said that on completion of OP-2 with a capacity of 8 MTA the cargo handling capacity will become 24 MTA which will be sufficient for the next 20 years.

He said that various modifications proposed and required to be carried out by TAP, in co-ordination with KPT for the efficient handling of liquid cargo during the reconstruction period are in hand.

Export molasses, additional pipelines are being laid to ensure that there is no problem in meeting the demand. KPT is fully prepared for the projected loads of Black, White oil and Molasses during reconstruction of OP-2 and same is well known to the users, he added.
