RECORDER REPORT

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Secretary Zubair Kidwai on Tuesday directed the administration of District East and other concerned agencies to expedite implementation of improvement scheme from Qayyumabad inter-section to Korangi crossing in consultation with the Traffic Engineering Bureau (TEB).

The TEB has submitted scheme comprising immediate action programme and long term improvement plan in response to the directive of the chief secretary.

The TEB immediate action plan aims at ensuring safety measures, mandatory warning signs, informative/guide signs and specific road safety messages at hazardous locations.

This plan comprises of delineation of centre line and division of road studs, road edge delineation on the portion on embankment with the help of yellow continuous line, minor physical improvement at critical inter-sections, as well as provision of zebra crossing at appropriate places.

The plan further envisages provision of street lights sufficient to ensure minimum light intensity needed at road surface, strict enforcement of speed limits check-on overtaking etc., and removal of unauthorised bus stops from the approach of Malir Bund Ramp near Qayyumabad.

The long-term plan includes provision of uniform roadway characteristics and proper geometric features at inter-sections related to junction control type.

It comprises widening of road section from three-lane two way road to dual carriage way with three lanes each direction, widening of approach ramp to bund from two lane two way present road to dual carriageway with three lanes in each direction, improvement of Korangi Road inter-section in view of the traffic composition and driving pattern by an alternative signalled inter-section design; improvement of Korangi Road/Landhi main road inter-section; provision of pedestrian crossing and passenger facilities and provision of permanent traffic safety and control devices.

The Director of TEB informed the CS copies of the plan have been forwarded to deputy Commissioner, Karachi East, Highway Department, and Clifton Cantonment Board for implementation.
