70,000 TB patients reported in Sindh

KARACHI: About 70,000 patients suffering from Tuberculosis (TB) were registered in Sindh during 1999 out of which 3,454 have recovered.

This was briefed to the Sindh Health and Population Welfare Secretary Mrs Rukhsana Saleem in a briefing given by the Director, TB Control Sindh, Ghulam Nabi Khokhar. The Secretary was informed that 38,373 patients are getting proper treatment while 31,291 patients are not taking interest in medical treatment.

The TB Control Programme Director also informed the Sindh Health Secretary that 90,713 children up to age of five years were inoculated with BCG.

Malaria Control Programme Director Dr Qadir Buksh briefing Mrs Rukhsana Saleem informed that some 672,329 slides were collected from the province out of which 21,030 were found infected with malaria.

He also informed that due to timely and exhaustive distribution of anti Malaria tablets spread of disease in the cyclone ravaged district of Thatta and Badin was checked effectively.

The Sindh Secretary Health directed the officials of both the TB and Malaria Control to take special measures for eradication of TB and Malaria from the province and camps be established for providing treatment facilities to people of remote areas. APP
