Efforts on to launch food stamp scheme

LAHORE: The Punjab government is taking necessary steps to launch 'Food Stamp Scheme' for low-paid people of urban areas.
This was observed during a meeting of commissioners held here on Wednesday with the chief secretary Hafeez Akhtar in chair.
It was decided in the meeting that a family having monthly income of Rs 3,500 would be eligible to get atta at cheaper rates. Special coupons would be issued to them after checking the particulars to be submitted by the people. Atta would be available at the designated shops and sale points.
The meeting also reviewed the canal water supply situation in the province. The meeting was informed that the Punjab government would ensure sufficient supply of canal water for the Rabi crop. For this purpose 10 to 15 percent water quantity has already been increased.
The meeting also reviewed different proposals to ensure distribution of Zakat funds.
It was decided to take necessary steps for reorganisation of Zakat committees. The chief secretary issued instructions for rehabilitation of special children. He directed that medical examinations of over 5,000 children studying in special education institutions be undertaken and better medical facilities extended to them.
The meeting also reviewed law and order situation and poverty alleviation programme.
