Cleanliness drive begins in Karachi today

KARACHI: The KMC, KDA and Karachi Water and Sewerage Board will jointly launch a coordinated programme for improvement and upgradation of existing drainage system in Karachi and its first phase will start from Tuesday (February 1).

The decision to this effect was taken at a meeting under Governor's inspection and implementation team Brig. A.S. Nasir (Retd) held here on Monday.

The representatives of civic agencies and Administrators of all DMCs, Karachi Cantonment Board, etc., attended the meeting.

The Chairman was apprised about the arrangements for implementation of the programme which has been finalised by every civic agency.

In this regard, these agencies are launching the cleanliness programme with their own manpower and resources in their areas and put in all out efforts to provide a clean atmosphere to the citizens of Karachi.

In this context, on the directive of Governor Sindh the KW&SB will start the programme of desilting of drainages and cleanliness at 17 different zones/places from Chishtia Masjid near Nasir Colony in Landhi-Korangi area. The KDA will provide its manpower and machinery to KMC and KW&SB to supplement their efforts for achieving the objective.

The KMC will undertake cleanliness of five nullahs including picther Kalri, Ranchore Line, Soldier Bazar, Lilly Road nallahs. The KDA has been assigned to remove all encroachments from the areas and also implement the cleanliness programme using its excavators for cleaning the nallahs in Qasba, SITE, Metroville and Shirin Jinnah Colony areas.

The Karachi Cantonment Board and Clifton Board, while apprising the meeting informed that they will take the task of improving the drainage system from 9th Street, Khayaban-e-Jami.

Under the crash programme, the DMC (Central) with the help of 2 excavators and 25 workers will initiate its cleanliness operation of twin nallahs of Shadman Town, Sector-14, and Nagan Chowrangi, Gujjarnallah, and New Karachi, Maulana Shaukat Ali 7000 Road areas.

The DMC Malir will begin its cleanliness work from Malir-15, to Nad-e-Ali (Chakora Nullah) Khokhrapar No. 4 and 7.

The DMC South utilising its own manpower and all available resources will participate in cleanliness of 8 Nallahs including Jhona Road, Shah Waliullah Road, Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai Road and Dr. Ziauddin Road behind Hotel Marriot and other nallahs in their jurisdiction.

In DMC (West) area Afridi Colony and Macher Colony would be cleaned during the operation.

The Chairman Inspection Team has deputed to Brig. Akhtar Zamin (Retd) to contact for dredging the delta areas and indicate the areas/sites for dumping the garbage in suitable places.

He also directed the EPA to identify and promote the environmental clubs on every DMC level to ensure full participation by the school children through vast publicity and motivation.

Also representatives of NGOs and notables of the areas will be acquainted about hygienic environment, to popularise the programme on grassroot level and provide mental relief to the citizens of Karachi so that it could achieve desired results, he added. APP
