'Jhonpra hotels' blamed for increase in crime

KARACHI: Sindh Governor Azeem Daudpota has said that 'Jhonpra' hotels were considerably responsible for the increase in crime in the industrial areas of the city.

The governor was talking to a delegation of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry which called on him at the Governor House on Monday.

Daudpota said the 'Jhonpra' hotels (thatched roof hotels) set up in industrial areas in and around factories were providing shelter to criminals and helping them in crimes.

He said the industrialists should help the government clear these encroachments which were being used as hotels for some and as hideouts by criminals. The industrialist agreed to remove the encroachments and all katcha (temporary) unauthorised construction from the Site area.

The delegation informed the governor about the alarming increase in all kinds of crime in the industrial areas.

He said the government would not leave the people alone and unprotected and would do its utmost to control crime. "However, the government would not be able to check crime without the cooperation and support from the people of the city", he stressed.

Provincial minister for transport and industry, Diwan Mohammed Farooqui, was also present at the meeting.
