Karachi to have
dairy plant
KARACHI: A new dairy plant, the first in private sector in Karachi, will go into commercial production shortly for producing bacteria-free chilled, pasturised and sterilised milk in packing.
The plant is being set up in Deh Konkar at a cost of Rs 120 million and it estimates to capture 25 to 30 percent market.
The plant's foundation stone laying ceremony was held here on Friday.
Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner Malir, said there is a great need for supply of hygienically produced milk for Karachiites.
He observed that at present bulk of milk supply is through shops and milkmen who do not care for health any hygiene.
According to him only 1.5 percent of milk supplied to the city is bacteria-free which is alarming for health.
The plant will also produce dairy products like cheese, flavoured milk and yogurts, ice cream and juices.
The plant machinery is being imported and the supply of milk will be ensured from its own farm which will be run by a consortium of baffalo cattle farm owners.ÑAPP
