Nawaz's appeal admitted
Govt contests acquittals,
demands death for ex-PM
RECORDER REPORT
KARACHI: The prosecution on Tuesday filed an appeal in the Sindh High Court demanding death sentence for former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in October 12 plane case.
The prosecution has also filed an appeal against the acquittal of the six co-accused in the plane hijacking case.
Addressing a press conference after the court proceedings, Advocate General of Sindh Raja Qureshi said there was enough evidence to establish conspiracy at the Prime Minister House on October 12, 1999. There was a meeting of minds of the principal accused and the other accused, he added.
Death sentence for Sharif has been demanded on the ground that the Anti Terrorism Court in its judgment of April 6, had not recorded coherent reasons for awarding lesser punishment to the accused on the proven charges against him.
Meanwhile, an appellant bench of the Sindh High Court, comprising Mr. Justice S A Rabbani and Mr. Justice Hameed Dogar, admitted Nawaz Sharif's appeal against two life terms awarded by the ATC in the plane hijacking case for hearing on a date to be fixed later.
Another appeal filed by the lawyers of Sharif against the forfeiture of his property and fine in the same case, was also admitted by the court and May 2, was fixed for hearing.
Barrister Azizullah Shaikh and Khawaja Naveed appeared for Nawaz Sharif.
