LOS ANGELES: The Council of Pakistan-American Affairs hosted a reception here in honour of the Advisor to the Chief Executive on National Affairs, Javed Jabbar, and Ambassador Dr Maleeha Lodhi at a hotel.

Over 2,000 prominent Pakistani-Americans from a wide-range of professions and sectors attended the dinner-reception.

Addressing the distinguished gathering, Javed Jabbar spoke on the future directions of Pakistan, with particular reference to the proposed devolution of Power and responsibility at the district levels.

Pakistan Americans welcomed the devolution proposals made by Chief Executive Gen Pervez Musharraf on March 23.

They expressed their keen interest and appreciation for the introduction of authentic democracy in Pakistan.

They emphasised the need of promoting education and information technology and effective accountability.

The gathering extended an enthusiastic reception to the 40-minute address by the advisor.

Describing the principles which shape current Pakistan-US relations, Dr Maleeha Lodhi said that on a fundamental level, there is an identity of views between the two countries on important issues such as the need for a peaceful, negotiated settlement of the Kashmir dispute, curbing violence, terrorism, narcotics, finding a solution to the strife in Afghanistan and buildings economic co-operation between Pakistan and the USA.

Maleeha Lodhi briefed the gathering on the visit of President Clinton to Pakistan.

The gatherings appreciated her role as an effective Pakistan Ambassador to USA.
