Closing stock market indices outside the U.S.

LONDON, April 17 (Reuters) - Here is how major stock markets outside the United States ended on Monday.

FRANKFURT - Germany's blue-chip DAX share index clawed back ground on Monday afternoon after the tech-rich Nasdaq in the United States recovered from Friday's record tumble. The DAX ended down 27.69 points, or 0.38 percent, at 7,187.14.

PARIS - The Paris Bourse ended essentially flat while the CAC-40 index recaptured the psychologically important 6,000-point level as early gains on Wall Street assuaged fears of a "Black Monday" for French shares.

The CAC-40 benchmark ended down 0.09 percent at 6,060.54 points, dowm 5.17 points.

ZURICH - The blue-chip Swiss Market Index closed down 164.8 points, or 2.2 percent, at 7,329.6 points, ending more than 110 points above a low of 7,216.9, after Wall Street and Nasdaq started firmer.

MILAN - Milan shares pared heavy early losses to close down 1.9 percent, tracking the rest of Europe, on Monday as the Dow Jones and Nasdaq index staged a partial recovery from last week's dramatic falls on Wall Street.

The all-share Mibtel closed down 1.9 percent or 562 points at 29,598 points.

AMSTERDAM - Dutch shares closed lower, but investors were calmed by drop of less than two percent following the rout on Wall Street on Friday.

The AEX index closed at 637.87 down 12.67 or 1.95 percent. SYDNEY - The Australian share market shed more than five percent, led by heavy selling in telecommunication, media and technology stocks after the sharp fall on Wall Street and on fears of further losses.

The old All Ordinaries Index closed down 176.0 points at 2,920.0.

JOHANNESBURG - Trampled world stock markets sent South African shares sprawling, dragging the benchmark index to its biggest one-day percentage drop in two-and-a-half years and battering technology counters.

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange's All-Share index fell 530.1 points or 7.4 percent to 6,632.6, The All Gold index closed at 1023.7, down 14.3 or 1.38 percent, while the Industrial index closed at 7432.6, down 666.5 or 8.23 percent.-Reuters
