RECORDER REPORT

KARACHI: The appeal against the conviction of Nawaz Sharif in the Oct 12 plane highjacking case would come up for hearing on Tuesday before the division bench of the Sindh High Court comprising Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar and Justice S. A. Rabbani.

The appeal was filed on Wednesday last by Barrister Azizullah Shaikh, counsel for Nawaz Sharif, under section 25 of the Anti Terrorism Act 1997 for setting aside the ATC judgment of April 6.

The ATC Judge, Rehmat Hussain Jaffery, on April 6, 2000, gave judgment in the October 12 plane case and sentenced Nawaz Sharif to two concurrent life terms, forfeiture of property and fine. The six co-accused were acquitted and ordered to be released if not needed in any other case.

Subsequently, two of the co-accused, Syed Ghous Ali Shah and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, were detained under the Maintenance Public Order (MPO) Ordinance for 30 days. The other four co-accused, Shahbaz Sharif, Saifur Rehman, Saeed Mehdi and Rana Maqbool Ahmed were handed over to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

Nawaz Sharif is confined in the Malir district prison at Landhi.
