Last batch of Pak troops
leave for Dili
PESHAWAR: The last batch of the Pakistan peace-keeping troops left here on Friday by a UN-chartered aircraft for Dili to join the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET).
According to an ISPR press release issued here, Pakistan is contributing about 1000 troops comprising elements of Army engineers and signals with a number of military observers and staff officers for the UNTAET.
The UN Security Council has approved a peace-keeping force for East Timor with a military component of 8,950 troops and 200 military observers. The UNTAET is an integrated multi-dimensional peace-keeping operation fully responsible for the administration of East Timor during its transition to independence.
The Pakistani contingent would be engaged in the restoration and repair of basic civil amenities and communication infrastructure to ensure the speedy rehabilitation of displaced citizens so as to bring their life back to normal.
De-mining and disposal of left-over explosives and demolition is also on the agenda of their task, said the ISPR press release.ÑAPP
