Pakistan fails

CARTAGENA, (Colombia): An Indian move to turn the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) against Pakistan on the concluding day of the 13th Nonaligned Ministerial meeting here on Sunday failed when member states refused to endorse an Indian proposal to single out Pakistan for "military rule".

The Indian delegation campaigned vigorously to attach a proviso to an internal OAU decision on democracy in Africa which, if successful, would have clubbed members states of the Nonaligned Movement with OAU members. Both African and non-African countries not only refused to go along with the Indian proposal which was aimed only at Pakistan but expressed disapproval of this ruse which was seen as self-serving and a misuse of the nonaligned forum.

India had no course left but to withdraw the proposal since it failed to attract any backers.

The final communique adopted by the foreign ministers reaffirmed the right of self-determination of people under foreign occupation and aliendomination. It condemned the brutal campaign in different parts of the world to suppress the legitimate struggles of people for self-determination. The communique also addressed a wide range of issues of common concern to the Movement covering politics, economy, social development, disarmament, nuclear non-proliferation and human rights.
