injured in clash
with police
in India
NEW DELHI: Around 40 students and seven cops were injured in a clash between police and students on the campus of Jamia Milia Islamia, here on last Sunday night.
Students threw stones when they were asked to clear a roadblock they had created, claimed the police. However, the students say that the police lathicharged them without any provocation. The injured were taken to AIIMS.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) said that police received information at 6 p.m. that one of two boys, who were allegedly involved in a case was seen in the university premises. The police reached the spot.
According to the DCP, when police tried to take Mubarak (one of the accused) in custody, a few students resisted. The accused fled the scene, he said, adding the police team returned. Again the police reached the campus after receiving information that the students have blocked the road.
"As soon as we reached, students started pelting stones at the police," the DCP said. The police then used teargas to disperse the students.
The students said that the police took them out of the hostels and beat them up with lathis. The police said they have detained several students. The police said the student also set one car on fire.ÑAPP
