50 pc cut
likely in
internet charges
LAHORE: The Internet charges may be curtailed by 50 percent in the country as the new policy on information technology is likely to be announced next month, PPI reliably learnt here on Sunday.
Sources said Pakistan government was negotiating terms with two US firms which wanted to invest in tele-communication sector, to promote particularly internet facilities in Pakistan.
"Talks are in final phase and an agreement is expected sometime this month".
The new facilities also include provision of voice-communication on a broader spectrum with most countries on nominal charges," the sources added.
The internet charges, which at present range between Rs 25-40 per hour are expected to fall around Rs 10-15 in a few months. "These rates will still be higher as compared to India where this facility is available for Rs 6-8 in most cities.
According to the initial draft of the new policy, ample band-width will be made available to internet service providers (ISPs) so that the net users could attain a reasonable speed to go through the web-pages.
Arrangements are also being made to hold video conferences facility in real time which will be specially helping universities within the country to interact with each other more effectively.ÑPPI
