PREFACE
The Economic Adviser's Wing of the Finance Division brings out
the Economic Survey annually, before the announcement of the Federal Budget. The Economic
Survey 1999-2000 reviews Pakistan's economic performance for the last yea of the previous
millennium. It will serve as a watershed to compare and differentiate the economic
performance of the two millenniums. The survey is being published at a time when
Pakistan's economy is making a modest turnaround. Much more efforts will be required to
sustain the growth momentum. Attempts have been made to make to make the Survey more
analytical than simply documenting the facts.
The Economic Survey has two parts: Descriptive and Statistical Appendix. The first part
carries out a comprehensive analysis of the performance in various sectors of the economy.
The second part contains time series data pertaining to different sectors of Pakistan's
economy. The analysis is nevertheless, based on nine to ten month's data for the current
fiscal year. The analysis of the fiscal during the year is based on information that was
available until May 30, 2000. We would however, welcome comments/suggestions for improving
this document.
I would like to thank various Ministers/Divisions/Agencies and Departments for their
timely supply of the required data to the Economic Adviser's Wing. Without their help, it
would not have been possible to release the Economic Survey in time.
Dr. Ashfaque Hasan Khan
Economic Adviser
